Wasters

A NEW BRITISH MUSICAL

Book by Poppy Burton-Morgan
Music by Jim Barne
Lyrics by Kit Buchan

“On the ferris wheel you can see for miles, but you never seem to get anywhere.”

Off-season in Weston Sands, a crumbling, rain-washed resort on the west coast. The arcades are closed, the ferris wheel is chained up and there isn’t much to do for Charli and Lucas except skate, smoke weed and break into the abandoned buildings along the seafront. It’s another listless summer for the two best friends - the last they’ll spend together before Charli heads off to Uni. The two misfits drift among the chippies and peeling shopfronts, fantasising about a future that will never arrive.

That is, until they meet Mags - the infamous ‘Crab Lady’ - a cursing vision in lurid hi-viz. With a bottle of Krupnik in one hand and a dead seagull in the other, the 86-year-old Polish beachcomber is about to turn their hopeless summer upside down. In a world of charity shops and small-time crooks, fruit machines and endless skies, our three heroes find the adventure and romance that surround them in the gloom.
