When evaluating Émilie’s significance one is tempted - but would be mistaken - to employ early twenty-first century terms. Indeed, it is virtually impossible to avoid thinking of her in the context of the world in which we live, informed as it is by liberal, after-feminist thinking. However, it is not inappropriate to see her as a remarkable role model of a life well lived. She pursued her own happiness and well-being. She strove to develop her intellect. She advocated social reform. Most importantly, she rejected received wisdom and made a positive contribution to the world in which she lived. And of course, it goes without saying that her achievements are all the more remarkable given her gender.

Émilie’s contemporary significance is that of a positive role model of a fulfilled and fulfilling life. She is therefore in many ways an inspirational and indeed an aspirational figure. It is this that compels me to tell her story. It is it my sincere hope that this play will serve to inspire and encourage young women to pursue their interest in the scientific arts; that we can readdress the balance of enquiry into this historically significant figure, and most importantly I simple wish to tell the story of this fascinating woman.
